New here, and still looking for my first CC. I was checking out the pic threads, and I must say, you folks do have some awesome looking machines!, and a great forum.
I noticed in the pics that some have stacks, and different looking mufflers angling to the front. I have tinnitus, and sensitive hearing, and would like to make the tractor as quiet as possible. I do wear hearing protectors when I run any equipment, but can still end up with a headache after extended periods. Any suggestions on fabricating a quiet exhaust system would be helpful. Josh |

I definitely recommend a Quietline tractor for you- anything that has full engine covers. Believe me, It really does make a difference . Plus, the exhaust goes out the front so that helps out a lot for operator comfort.

The 82 series are quieter yet because they don't rattle as much as the QL tractors do. Honestly, though, if you wear earplugs the sound is not a problem, regardless of which model tractor you have. They're all decently loud without ear protection.

I add some thin, adhesive foam weatherstripping along rattle areas. It helps some. Keeps down the tinny resonance.

If I end up with an older model, is it possible to add something, like welding on an additional / better muffler, or an extension pipe angling to the front & downward? This will be an important issue for me, for any extended usage.

I added the Supertrapp muffler to my 1864, bought from jackssmallengines.com. Kind of expensive, and what I think was really the problem is a broken baffle in my muffler in the first place. Anyway, definitely made a difference, tones it down, and with a properly working stock muffler would make even more of a difference. But, not truly quiet by any means, and what you'll find is when you engage the mower deck it actually is just as loud as the engine!
I think my 2084 is the quietest of the CC's we've owned. Should be identical to the 1864 but I think it's just that it's muffler is in good shape. It's quieter than the 3204, much quieter than the 1211 was. Seriously, I think the better investment would be a set of very high quality over the ear hearing protectors. Also, if you've never tried them, try to borrow a set of noise cancelling headphones, Bose are the most common, they are expensive but probably worth it given your problems with noise.

Im glad someone was wealthy enough to try the supertrapp! I have been wondering for about 2 years if it is truly quiet.

Hey thx for the info on the Supertrapp, that looks very interesting. Did you get both pieces, the muffler & resonator? Do you happen to have any pics of it mounted up?

Yes, you really need the two parts for it to work well (or so they tell you!). I bought the 5S, 3 discs, and resonator. I don't have any close up pics, you can see it here on the 1864:

I just read some articles that says it does make a significant reduction in noise.
Looks great. I guess you had to remove part of the grille to run it out the front? Thx for the pic. JP |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
