Default 1882 Revisited

In regards to the pto side seal leak....

After breaking the stem off the breather valve I decided I'd better go behind the cover to retrieve it.
What I found was quite a bit of carbon build up on the exhaust valve. Not sure if it would stop the valve from functioning correctly or not. The intake side was clean.

Also don't know if any of this would cause the leak.

Any insight, as always, is appreciated.

In order to over pressurize the crank case the valve would have to be stuck open or otherwise unable to close causing the compression in the chamber to bleed past and cause the oil in the case to blow out the seal. Ahhhhhhh, ain't likely and besides it would run so rough that the oil leak would not be your first complaint.

After replacing the breather with the new style, and the crank seal again, it still blows out the seal.
I'm going to put it all back together, keep and eye on the oil level, mow my lawn and see what happens.

Hopefully I'll have a new Craftsman deck and won't be pressed for answers on the Cub.

The 1882 should have a spin on oil filter...have you changed it, and did you use the correct filter?

The leak is where the crank meets the seal - not where the seal meets the block (sorry if I made it sound otherwise).
I have NOT changed the oil filter. I was going to wait until I had the leak resolved. I'll go ahead and do that in the morning.

Sorry, forgot to answer the seal question before. The first replaced seal likely was not Kohler brand as it came in an unmarked bag.
The one I installed on Friday is an OEM, Kohler packaged seal.

There were single puffs of smoke, on start up only, from the right (if sitting in the seat) exhaust.

As far as "thinking" about a new engine__that's all I'm doing. Nearly nothing happens here, right or wrong, in knee-jerk fashion. That said, I would like input on the reman vs new scenario.

Picked up a Kohler brand oil filter but am not sure if I'll get to it today

Is it possible you have the crankcase overfilled with oil?

If the dipstick (tractor and owner) is accurate, no, its not overfilled.

I changed the oil and filter (OEM) - no help

Someone suggested I may have a bent crank????????? Yes - No - Maybe So?
