I need some deck bearings for the deck on my 109. Also have a 44C that I want to use, the 38, I think, is missing some of the deflectors under it and is leaving a trail with the left blade instead of throwing all the grass out the side. I think dads did this when it was new also so I am guessing this is how the deck works.
The 44c needs blades and maybe some bearings, they seem ok but not sure I could tell without blades. I guess I would need a different center pulley to fit the early model belt. So the questions are, Can you get bearings separate or do you need to get the spindles complete? I have tried to look up parts on the parts look up site and when I enter the deck number it says I am crazy. Entered the 149 serial number and it still said I was whacked. Why can I not make that site work? |

You will need a different center pulley on the 44C to work with your 109. It will have a 5/8" belt pulley and you will need a 1/2" pulley. The spindles are rebuildable. I have heard that a late 60's or early 70's GM car spindle bearing will work. I can't verify this, but if you take one of the bearings to a parts house they should be able to find what you need. The center pulley is still available from Cub Cadet. I had to replace one on a 44A deck last year. About $45 or so.
When you go into the parts window at cubcadet.com, enter your 109 into the model window. Another window will open up. Click on attachments in the list at the right and this will open another window showing all the attachments that would have fit your 109. You should see a listing for a 44A deck. It is the same as a 44C except for the belt size of the center pulley. Try this link for the drive parts of the 44 deck: http://cubcadetparts.arinet.com/scri...evel=undefined

Thanks DX, I looked again and the 44C has the spindles, washers, nuts, just missing blades. It looks pretty good, needs some paint but no holes and blade deflectors are in good shape. The deck on the 109 has no tag, thought it was a 38 but looks like a 42 with the tape blade to blade. The blades are a little rough but are sharp now, will they work on the 44C deck? I looked at the bearing on one of the 44C spindles and I see now how they go together. Can I use the center pulley off the A deck? I say A cause I think that is what it is. The square edge type that looks very flying wing ish. No guide wheels, wooden front roller, but the guide wheels could very well be gone, the guide loops on the end have been welded up so who knows. If these parts will change, blades and pulley, tomorrow will see a 44 C hanging under the 109. Will it do a better job at not leaving a trail of clippings from the left blade? At least it has the baffles so that can't hurt.

The blades are different between the two decks. The 42 deck uses two small outer blades and one large center blade. The 44 uses 3 blades that are the same or close to the same size. Also the Center pulley on the 42 deck is completely different than the center pulley on the 44 deck.
44" deck items needed: The center pulley number you need is: IH-59703-C2 $42.71 Will need PTO belt number : IH-59971-C1 $29.89 You will need three of these blades: 759-3838 $39.69/ea. The front pulley arms on the mule drive will need to be bent to correctly align the belt with the off center pulley on the 44 deck. You don't want to shred a new belt. My 44C deck cuts like a dream. I really like it better than the older 42" decks. If I am wrong on something or have missed something I am sure someone will chime in and correct the problem. Hope all of this helps.

OK, if that was any more thorough you would have had to come down and do the work FOR me!! So I am going with the pulley fits the spindle but uses a 1/2" belt and the belt is a different length so the need for change. I knew the blades were different length so that was pretty much a no brainer. If I mount the deck on the mule drive system that is on it the pulley will be off center? I have the mule drive/carrier for the C deck, but the pulleys would be 5/8 instead of 1/2. Would there be an advantage to switching the mule drives or just the pulley and front deck hanger to fit the old carrier? Thanks for the great info, you guys are awesome!!! Might just get some bearings for the moment till I can get all the parts together. Bet a few bearings are cheaper, still will leave a trail of grass, but it takes a little time for me to get this stuff going. I am guessing the 44C would not pull any harder than the 42" without baffles and weak bearings. |

If you have the mule drive from the 44c just swap out the two pulleys on the mule drive with the two from the 42" deck. The pulley brackets should already have the correct bend if it is the correct mule drive for the 44.

I know what your saying so I will look at it and see, I am betting it is the one that came with it cause the guy I got it from was a puller, so bet it came off the same tractor. Thanks again for the info. I am getting ready to head over to nashcubs place to see what I can come up with to fix the 44C. Pulled the spindles off the 42 and they are the sealed kind, heck if I am going to spend some money I would rather have the C deck! Off to Nashcubs yee haw!!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
