My Cub Cadet is a 1976 model 800. This winter, I am doing more maintenance than I have done before, I have pulled the spindles out of the 38A deck to clean and relube them and sharpen blades. A LOT of grease had become dry and chunky inside the spindle cup assemblies, making for rough operation.

I'll find out in a couple of months, when I put it all back together.
The most rare cub out there, a coveted prize...... and you MOW WITH IT???
I'd restore it and get another cub to mow with. But hey, it's your tractor!! I'm happy for you!

Jonathan, my Cub gets mad if I don't mow the yard at least once a week with it. It even sulks if I have to get something else in the barn and don't bring it out to play.

As much as I hate to admit it, I don't recommend that anyone abuse their hydros the way my Brother and I abuse mine.

Quite frankly, I've been slamming my hydros from forward to reverse and back again for YEARS. Normally, when I get them, I pressure wash the years of crud off of them, repair the trunnion, clean the release valves, and change the fluid and filter. Then they are all set for a good many years of abuse.

If you use yours like a person with good sense, it should last your lifetime, your children's lifetime and your grandchildren's. I wouldn't ever worry about "working" one too hard.

I'm sure if I ever find one, I'd use it too. Collector or not. It's not like your going to hurt it.

Something else, I inherited the 800 from my dad. He bought it in 1976 after he retired from IH. Until he passed on, he used it to mow his yard, plus two Church lawn areas.

Neither one of my brothers wanted it, so I said ( more like shouted from the rooftops ) " I WANT THE CUB CADET! ! !

I've been plowing this year with my 129 and it has done a good job. I think I need more weight on the rear. It's only got 35 lb weights on it. I get a good bit of wheel spin. I guess I should chain up too. I should have my 782 ready for next winter.

I hope not...if so I've got a long winter ahead of me.....

I'd be more concerned about engine durability/life running the winter we have with a front mounted thrower.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
