J-Mec..n Flyingb ....Thanks, I now have a better understanding what was going on back in the early 80's with Cub, IH, and MTD !
Any opinion on the average hours you can get out of a 17hp Kohler ? |

Seen them fail with as little as 400, and as high, or higher than 1500. Depends on if they are always on flat ground, and how well they get maintained.

So 1700 hours would be on the very high end for that motor ?

Yes, that is on the high end for it but with that style of hour meter there is no way of knowing how many times it has cycled around. The small needle IIRC is 600 hours and if the key was left on it runs until the battery is dead. That is a good looking 782 and it looks to be an IH one. If you look at the serial tag it will tell you if it was built by IH or CCC. If it starts out 2050594 then it was built by IH and the front ports were an option and it will have a cast iron rear. If it has a model and serial then it was built by CCC. If the model number is XXX-784-XXX then the front ports were standard.
Great find on both of those tractors! ![]()

If you are interested in the history of these tractors there are some good books about them, but here is a small summary of the Cub Cadet.

I'll take my medicine when I'm wrong, just never knew it was an option on an IH built 782. You learn something new every day, and it usually seems to come from this forum for me
![]() Yes sir it is on the high end, at least. Granted, there are some people out there who get a golden egg, take care of it, and it lasts them 2000+ hours. But from what I've seen/read, that is not average. Then there some engines, like the last motor in one of my 1811's, that didn't get taken care of by the PO and was on deaths doorstep when I replaced it with something like 857 hours. That, usually, is not average. If taken care of it's whole life, not run in any poor circumstances (WOT no load frequently, clean cooling fins, regular oil/filter changes, etc) then I don't see why 1600-2000 hours would be out of the question (it may not be running like new at 2000 hours, though ![]() ![]() Seems like most peoples point of view on the KT/Magnum series motors is run them till they stop just because they are so expensive, and difficult, to overhaul properly.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
