My guess from what you have said is that it tossed a rod or other important part that makes it run. That engine is not noted for being very reliable. Was this a Big Box store purchase?

Home Depot. I am going to check in with the GM there. He was around when I was getting supplies earlier in the week and asked me to let him know how it went.
I know this is hypothetical, but wondering what would cause a rod to be tossed. |

Please don't take this the wrong way. The Big Box stores because of the enormous buying power that they have tell Cub Cadet and John Deere if you want our business this is what we will pay for a tractor with X amount of power and a certain size deck so then Cub and JD go to the people that make the engines and transmissions and tell them what they need in order to make the deal work. So Kohler came up with the Courage engine, B&S also did the same. Unfortunately it was designed to be a low cost engine to fit the marketing need. The stuff sold by the Cub dealers while a few $$$ more had Kawasaki engines if I recall correctly. I doubt that anything you did caused the problem. As far as what would cause a rod to fail, lots of things probably in these things just not enough meat, not sure but if you look on Craig's list you see these low end tractors for sale often with failed engines or transmissions. I hate it that MTD has whored the Cub name the way they have. JD is doing the same. I wish they had kept with a quality product and skipped the Big Box stores. It is what it is. I hope you are still covered under warranty. If you are I would get it fixed and then sell it. Just my 2 cents.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
