A variator is a cheap JD creeper, that uses belts, pulleys and 'hokus pocus" to make it work....
Grew up on those (dad bought it before he went to work for IH). The Deeres use variable speed pulley as opposed to hydrostatic. You could "slip the clutch all you wanted with no damage and no jerking because all you were doing was moving the variable speed pulley. You have a lever on the right side of the dash that served as a adjustable stop for the max speed you wanted to go in each gear. Transmission is a 4 speed, Peerless I believe, same as in some on Craftsman mowers and Zippy's Case. I don't know how well the setup worked under heavy loads but it did great for mowing grass. I think the lawn and garden dept got the idea from the ag depts. combines. I have 2 Deere combines with the same basic drive system, except you use a hydraulic cylinder the move the variable speed pulley (its about 18" in dia. and 150-200 lbs) Anyway, that's how a variable speed Deere works.

Nice Find Lew, test it out honestly and Im sure you'll like it

Im not brand loyal nor am I much of Green fan but the SF110 is a great little tractor, considerably heavier than the earlier RF and quite capable of some heavy garden work or snow removal. The variable system works very well and allows infinately adjustable ground speed in any gear. AND NO... the wheels are NOT backwards... LOL... the original hub caps sit deep inside the rims rather than against the outer bead area like most chrome moon caps do. The engines are rubber mounted which definately reduces the vibration but it also seems to help overall noise because my 110 is about the quietest K-Series engine Ive ever had.

BTW... I have an original manual if you need anything checked out in it. Note the hub caps on the manual cover pic.

...and before anyone asks... the rig on the front is a magnet, I had done some demolition on an old grainary so I was cleaning up the mess the day of the pic.

Thanks for the info Lance. This has a solid mounted K181 in it,I think the variator pulley is seized so it does not work.
Nice rig you have there.

Solid mount 181?? must be earlier than mine, I have the one runner and a parts 110 and a parts 112, all have rubber donuts. If you need any small easy to ship parts just ask, I probably have an extra. I bought the two 110s from an older gent who originally intended on restoring both but health issues arose so he called me and only asked for $200.

Thank you! As I read through this I thought, "Am I the only one who knows the wheels are on right?"

Wish I could find a round fender 110. I have a brass tag deck, and a never used (or even mounted up) brass tag 6 way blade for one.

These are certainly sad days when my Uncle Lewy has become a turncoat....

Nice find Lew. Is there nothing that escapes your radar?

Seems to me it might just be the CCs that do things backwards and put the valve stems on the inside

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
