Glad you got it figured out! I was thinking it sounded like a timing issue.

There is a screw that holds the handle to the mounting bracket, and if the friction washer comes loose they will idle down themselves. BTDT many times. Just something to check.
I was thinking that too......

Changing the point gap is how you adjust timing..... but not by guessing. If you set it with a feeler gauge, you didn't read the manual.

Here is how you set timing:

If you don't do it correctly, it can cause damage.

You said the governor was closing the carb. You sure about that? When the governor moves in a quick motion as an engine starts to die, it is supposed to OPEN the throttle plate, not close it. If it was closing it.... something is painfully wrong. I'm not convinced you got your issue fixed.

Well I did as manual says to do so...that was called static timing.

As I stated prior I bought this tractor this way. I was only tracking down the miss and the fact it would rev up and then idle down buy itself with throttle lever wide open. After I set the point cap it came right out of the miss. Mowed with it for 2 hours today didn't miss a beat. Sounds like it's fixed to me....

Yes, Mr. Parker, I understand. The book does say that the gap should be .020". However, many, many people do not read the information that is in step 4, which states that the points should break with the "S" in the window. On this old of an engine, you need to time it statically with the link I provided. .020" gets you close... but not exact. Many times you end up at around .015" when timed properly.

Do as you wish. I'm only providing assistance which is what you asked for.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
